About Groundswell Community Farm

Our Mission

The mission of Groundswell Community Farm is to grow high quality, nutrient dense, organically certified vegetables while building strong communities through organic agriculture.

Who We Are

Groundswell Community Farm is a small, seven-acre organic vegetable farm located outside Zeeland, MI that is dedicated to producing locally grown, certified organic produce. On our farm we have three primary values that drive our food production: community, transparency and integrity. We believe by placing these three values first creates a trustworthy relationship with our customers, and produces high quality produce. Everything we produce on the farm is Certified Organic, Non-GMO and locally grown by people in your community. The heart of our farm is our 100 member CSA. We also sell at multiple markets in West Michigan and wholesale to various restaurants and grocery stores across West Michigan. Welcome to our farm!

Farming Practices

Healthy Soil

Groundswell grows very nutritious vegetables because of our soil! There’s something special about Carlisle Muck soil. It consists of soil organic matter that is 40% or higher in our soil. We farm in a manner that preserves these valuable nutrients.

Reduce Tillage

One of our primary goals is to minimize the tillage of our soil. This naturally depletes noxious weeds over time and is better for the soil microorganisms, which produces better, more nutritious vegetables.

Chemical Free

We do not use synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides or sprays. We do not use organically approved sprays unless we are having pest or disease problems. All cultivation is done by hand or with implements.

Certified

We are Certified Organic through OEFFA (Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association).

Cover Crops

We utilize cover crops like peas and oats to add nutrients back to the soil through nitrogen fixation and green manure. Cover crops also protect our soil from erosion.

“Groundswell strives to find a balance between maximizing food production and environmental stewardship. We take a “whole-system approach” to farming by finding a balance between production and sustainability. We farm in a manner that protects the environment, while producing an abundance of food ten months out of the year. Focusing on soil health and viability, reducing tillage, using cover crops, farming without synthetic chemicals and remaining certified organic are a few of the ways we accomplish this task. ”
