After much thought and introspection in 2016, Katie and Tom listed Groundswell Community Farm for sale, to pursue opportunities in farm education and advocacy. We were so glad to see how well farmworkers managed Groundswell in 2017 and to have Steve lease the farm for 2018 to allow us to make this transition!
Katie is now teaching the MSU Organic Farmer Training Program in East Lansing. This allows her to expand on the farmworker training she developed at Groundswell and to work alongside aspiring farmers to write farm business plans with real, attainable goals. Another benefit is getting to work with Groundswell’s former farm manager, Sarah Geurkink. Lastly, I enjoy living near Lake Lansing, a 540 acre park and living in a neighborhood with lots of Leland’s friends.
Tom is a full-time dad, volunteers at Leland’s school and is getting involved in the local food and farming scene here in Lansing. In 2017, he managed to orchestrate buying a house, selling our home, leasing our farm to Steve and selling our second farm-site on Polk St. while also organizing trainings for beginning farmers throughout the state through the MSU Farmer Field School.
